To Autumn

    SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
        Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
    Conspiring with him how to load and bless
        With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
    To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
        And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
            To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
    With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
        And still more, later flowers for the bees,
        Until they think warm days will never cease,
            For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

I've been drinking too much coffee, slowed down my pace to smell and see what's round the corner, loved feeling the fresh wind against my face, loved this town and the thought that a wonderful new food shop will be opening in the next block this autumn. Waiting for the plumber to come round for the third time this Friday, hopefully then we'll finally be able to wash the dishes in the new kitchen rather than in the bathroom sink and ditch the paper plates in favour of real ones.

Olen kitannut paljon kahvia, hidastanut askelta kulmillamme, nauttinut kirpakasta tuulesta kasvoja vasten, kaupungista, sateesta, ajatuksesta, että lähikortteliin on tulossa uusi ihana ruokakauppa. Odotan, että saadaan putkimies paikalle perjantaina kolmannen kerran, jospa silloin voimme vihdoin siirtää astianpesuoperaation kylppäristä virallisesti uuden keittiön puolelle, siirtyä kertakäyttöastioista kunnollisiin.

Ikkunan takana puhaltavat syystuulet, raukeana ja nuhaisena viltin alla, Siilin eleganssi kaverina (englanninkielisenä käännöksenä, kun en raaskinut pulittaa suomalaisesta kovakantishintaa), hääpäivää vietetään illalla hyvin pienimuotoisesti viinilasillisen ja elokuvan merkeissä, hiljaista kiitollisuutta.

Autumnal day, feeling fluey and cosy under my blanket, turning the pages of The Elegance of the Hedgehog, our anniversary today will be a very low-key affair with a glass of red and a good movie to watch, quiet gratefulness.

Blueberry delights and butterfly wings

By the way, if you saw the film Bright Star, didn't you find the butterfly scene rather breathtaking? You can take a look at the room full of butterflies here. Weekend joys to all of you! (I just have to brag that this weekend I'm going to be seeing U2 live for the first time in my life, I just cannot wait!)

Rachel Ashwell's London home

In the middle of all the grubby renovation mess and delayed plumbing jobs (yesterday everything was going pretty smoothly, today there's a pile of little hiccups on the way), it's good to fix one's eyes on something as feminine and floaty as the London home of the queen of shabby chic, Rachel Ashwell. Oh to hit the Portobello Road market, it's been so long!
