Boy was I happy when I clicked on a link on Kinfolk and landed on the Makers, a photo project by Brooklyn-based photographer Jennifer Causey, featuring a whole host of creative people living and making things happen in Brooklyn. Certainly inspires to get those creative juices running.

Meeting Emma Cassi

On my last day in London something very special took place. I nearly fell off my chair a couple of days before when I received an invitation from Emma Cassi to pop round to her home for some tea and cake. All I can say is that this blog world is something truly amazing! As a longstanding admirer of Emma Cassi's incredible jewellery, which she makes by hand using vintage lace and other sourced materials, and follower of her blog with its constant stream of charm and delicate inspiration, you can imagine how giddy I felt! Her home and family were of course every bit as delightful as I'd imagined and it was such a pleasure to chat about this and that and see the nook where all her creations take shape. Not only did I come away with my head spinning with new thoughts, but also with some pieces for my daughter and myself wrapped inside an old music sheet - and a sense of awe at the random kindness of another human being, someone I'd never even met. Thank you Emma!

Viimeisenä Lontoo-päivänä tapahtui jotain ihan ylettömän erityistä. Pari päivää aiemmin tipahdin lähes tuoliltani kun Emma Cassilta tuli kutsu piipahtaa luonaan teelle ja leivonnaisille. Ei voi kuin huokaista, että on tämä blogimaailma oikeasti ihmeellinen! Pitkään pitkään olen hänen uskomattomia korujaan ihastellut, joita hän loihtii käsin vanhasta pitsistä ja muista vintage-materiaaleista. Ja bloginsa on ollut minulle jatkuva esteettisyyden lähde, joten voitte vain kuvitella miten täpinöissä olin! Emman koti ja perhe olivat tietysti juuri niin sykähdyttäviä kuin olin kuvitellut, ja ilo oli jutella niitä näitä ja nähdä nurkka, jossa hän kaikki ihanuutensa loihtii. Pois lähdin pää uusia ajatuksia pullollaan ja kädessä vielä vanhaan nuottipaperiin kääräistyt korut tyttärelleni ja minulle. Ennen kaikkea sain viemisiksi ihmetyksen toisen ihmisen ylenpalttisesta hyväsydämisyydestä toista kohtaan, vaikka koskaan ei oltu edes tavattu. Kiitos Emma!

Spitalfields Market was a real highlight of our trip. An antique market was in store on Christmas Eve, while the selection was more varied in the week with an abundance of vintage clothes stalls. I was also impressed by any foodie's dream, Leadenhall Market, which is tucked away in the City.

Lontoosta jäi kohokohtana mieleen Spitalfields Market. Jouluaattona oli pystyssä antiikkimarkkinat ja viikolla sekalaisempaa tarjontaa, vintage-vaatteita ainakin runsain mitoin. Myös alla vilahtava ruokaan keskittyvä Leadenhall Market Cityn uumenissa teki suuren vaikutuksen.

A quick hello from me - here again and I've been pouring over all the comments you've left me in the meantime with gratitude! Our time in London went swiftly and at times even hectically. We managed to cram in lots of time with family, but saw some lovely corners of London as well. I didn't take very many photos this time, but I'll write a separate little London post shortly.

Pikahiukkaus - täällä ollaan taas ja kiitollisin mielin luin tällä välin jättämiänne kommentteja. Lontoon joulu sujui jouten ja vähän hektisestikin, sukulaisia nähtiin, mutta Lontootakin sopivissa ripauksissa. Kuvasaalis jäi varsin pieneksi, mutta laitan vielä pienen erillisen Lontoo-tervehdyksen, kunhan saan kuvat jonkinlaiseen järjestykseen.

A few shots from home that I've taken in the dim December light before Christmas. Our living room still feels rather bare and in need of an injection of pictures, curtains and what not. But I'm so happy we managed to finish the floors and all the painting in time for Christmas.

Tässä muutama puolihämärässä ennen joulua räpsimäni kuva. Olohuone tuntuu edelleen niin kovin paljaalta, verhoja, tauluja ja vaikka mitä vailla. Mutta ihanaa kuitenkin kun saatiin ennen joulua olohuone taas käyttöön lattiaremontin ja maalausurakan jälkeen.

London Christmas

My intention has been to avoid any type of Christmas-related stress, but have nevertheless been darting around like a headless chicken and working into the small hours to meet deadlines. I know I promised to take some photos from home, too, but we've been creating more chaos than order here, so haven't really been inspired... But holiday, now! We'll be spending Christmas in London. With a great deal of grannies and cousins to see and sherry and mince pies to down, I'm not sure how much time will be left for rummaging around London. The plan is to at least head to an antiques&vintage market on Christmas Eve morning, and I'm assured that mince pies will be going around there, too :)

Avery merry Christmas and sparkling New Year to all of you - and thank you for tagging along during the past year!

Joulustressiä oli tarkoitus välttää, mutta kummasti sitä viime viikon on paahtanut töitä valmiiksi ja säntäillyt ympäriinsä. Kotoakaan en lupauksestani huolimatta ole saanut otettua kuvia, sillä täällä on loihdittu lähinnä sotkua eikä niinkään joulusiivousta. Mutta nyt alkaa loma! Joulun vietämme Lontoossa. Luvassa rutkasti sukulointia, sherryä ja mince pie'ta, enkä tiedä miten paljon itse Lontoota ehtii tällä kertaa koluamaan. Mutta aattoaamuna on ainakin tarkoitus suunnata antiikki&vintage -markkinoille, sielläkin on kuulemma niitä mince pie'ta luvassa :)

Suloista joulua ja säkenöivää uutta vuotta kaikille - ja kiitokset kun olette roikkuneet menneenä vuonna mukana!

Weekend at home

Weekend greetings from amidst the bustle of all of us at home. So far a weekend of visitors, popping to the library, a long walk, nothing extraordinary, but rather nice and relaxing. Tomorrow we'll be celebrating daddy, as it's Father's day over here. I've also been browsing through a couple of new interior books, a glimpse of one can be seen below. I could write a bit more about them soon.

Kitchen glimpse / Keittiövilaus

Here are a few glimpses of our kitchen, which isn't even that new anymore. It's just taken us a surprisingly long time to bring it all together. We're planning to add an old round glass lamp to the ceiling, which is still hiding in the attic somewhere, and hope to find a fairly low old cupboard to go against the wall on the right, where we can hide the microwave and other bits and bobs. The kitchen is a small, L-shaped space that was sectioned off the previous large kitchen, with our daughter's room now on the other side. The cupboards carry on a little further to the left of the hob with the fridge right at the end, which these pictures don't show. We used basic Ikea kitchen frames for the cupboards, and my clever husband built wooden doors to fit around them. I was dreaming of concrete worktops, but in the end we went for grey quartz. Sorry about the bad quality of the photos, a rubbish camera + a dim space isn't the best possible combination. We installed an old arched window in the in-between wall, so at least a few rays of natural light enter the kitchen. I'll have to get some more photos up soon.

Tässä muutama vilaus keittiöstämme, joka ei ole enää edes niin kovin uusi. Aikaa vaan mennyt vietävästi näinkin pikkutilaan ja vielä on esim. lamppu hukassa vintillä (tarkoitus ripustaa kattoon vanha yksinkertainen pallolamppu) ja vanha pienehkö kaappi hakusessa oikealle jäävälle seinälle, jonne saisi esim. mikroaaltouunin piiloon. Keittiö on siis pieni, L-mallinen entisestä isosta keittiöstä lohkaistu tila, jonka toisella puolella on nyt tyttären huone. Kaapisto jatkuu vielä pikkuisen uunista vasemmalle, jääkaappi viimeisenä, ei vaan näissä kuvissa näy. Kaapistot koostuvat Ikean perusrungoista, joihin mies näppäränä rakensi puiset ovet. Betonitasot olivat pitkään haaveissa, mutta päädyttiinkin harmaaseen kvartsiin. Huonoa kuvanlaatua taas pahoittelen, huono kamera ja muutenkin hämärä keittiö ei ole paras mahdollinen kombinaatio. Väliseinään upotettiin vanha kaari-ikkuna, josta saadaan sentään pikkuisen luonnonvaloa. Täytyy laittaa lisää kuvia taas jossain vaiheessa.

Drawn towards chalk whites, ash greys, all things muted and pared down. And towards overlong white curtains, patinated herringbone floors, old fireplaces, clothes racks, paneled walls, magazine piles and fairylights (as always).

And suddenly black floors seem increasingly appealing, too.

A change of scenery did us a wealth of good, but it is lovely to be back again. Today for the home of Emily Chalmers, who seems one busy lady as stylist, shop owner and author of a pile of books. She lives in a converted warehouse in London's Shoreditch, filled with flea market finds and all things nice. Her shop Caravan Style can be found here.

Maisemanvaihdos teki hyvää, mutta hyvältä tuntuu olla taas täälläkin. Autumn break

The rain has been pattering all day, occasionally coupled with howling wind. But I'm not complaining, as days like these are filled with a magical mood. I was gazing at pictures from New York, Paris and London today, every autumn I find myself yearning for some big city buzz. We're heading for a little autumn break (in a small town though), so the blog will be quieting down for a moment. Take care until then!

Tänään on sade ropissut ja tuuli välistä ulvonut. Enkä valita, sillä juuri tällaisissa päivissä on tunnelmaa. The New York home of designer couple Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, aka Roman and Williams, is just incredible, see for yourselves! I've collected pictures from a number of sources, you'll find the related articles via the links at the bottom of the post. I couldn't leave any of the kitchen angles out, as I love it so. The kitchen is created from separate pieces that have been painted in the same tone and joined by marble worktops. Add some industrial lamps and the result is just perfect. I also love the glass-paned library nook that divides the living space.

Newyorkilainen arkkitehti-/sisustussuunnitelijapariskunta Robin Standefer ja Stephen Alesch, ts. Roman and Williams, omistavat mitä huipuimman kodin, katsokaa vaikka! Tässä on niputettuna kuvia eri lähteistä, postauksen alta löytyvät linkit artikkeleihin. Keittiökuvia kertyi jonkin verran, teki minuun sen verran suuren vaikutuksen. Keittiö koostuu eriparikaapeista, jotka on maalattu saman sävyiseksi ja yhdistetty marmoritasoilla. Joukkoon vielä vanhoja teollisuusvalaisimia ja lopputulos on perfecto. Ja tuo oleskelutilasta lohkaistu kirjasto saa sydämen sykkimään.

I've had a bit of a style crush on Helena Christensen for years. Not only is she exceptionally stunning, but she also has a great look going on with a somewhat boho feel,

as well as good taste when it comes to all things home, (but hey, she's Danish after all...).

Seaside dream

I noticed via Anna Mård that the seaside house of Swedish stylist Eva Lindh is up for sale. Wouldn't say no to a little country hideaway by the sea myself.

We had a lovely day at the local food festival in Fiskars today, mingling with cute cows, celeb chefs and good friends. Hope your weekend is going swimmingly!

Serene charm

Starting off the weekend with some pictures from a Swedish home with a truly serene feel. Old kitchens like this are perfection, it's a shame our's was replaced with a small and unpractical chipboard version sometime i the 60s I guess. I'm sure there's a lingering waft of coffee in the air when I look at these.

Viikonlopun alkuun kuvia ruotsalaiskodista, jossa on seesteinen tunnelma kohdallaan. Tuo vanha keittiö on ihan täydellinen, harmittelen, kun meillä se oli ilmeisesti 60-luvulla korvattu pikkuruisilla lastulevykaapeilla. Näitä katsoessa tunkee väkisin viekoitteleva kahvin tuoksu nenään.

The weather looks promising, a little excursion in order tomorrow methinks. There's a Slow Food festival in Fiskars Village, or maybe we'll end up as far as the coastal town of Hanko.

Luvassa leppeää säätä, huomenna voisi suunnata vaikkapa pienelle retkelle. Ainakin Fiskarsissa järjestetään Slow Food -ruokamarkkinat ja miksei sitä Hankoonkin asti voisi suunnata.

Like a Painting

The home of artist couple Lili Nalovi and Jesko Willert is like an incredible work of art itself. The home has featured in a number of magazines, including Finnish Glorian koti. It goes down as one of the most impressive houses I've seen. The couple has covered the walls with Japanese rice paper, which they have painted themselves. They studied decorative painting in Florence, a skill which is reflected in the ceiling reliefs they created. A backdrop of a mansion-style house in Hamburg with its original moldings, the result is nothing short of exquisite.

Taiteilijapariskunta Lili Nalovin ja Jesko Willertin koti Hampurissa on kuin taideteos itsekin. Tämä koti on vilahtanut useassa eri lehdessä, melko hiljattain myös Glorian kodissa, ja on kyllä yksi vaikuttavimpia mitä olen nähnyt. Pariskunta on päällystänyt seinät itse maalaamillaan japanilaisilla riisipaperitapeteilla. Nalovi ja Willert opiskelivat koristemaalausta Firenzessä ja ovatkin loihtineet upeita kattomaalauksia kotiinsa. Ja kartanomainen talo alkuperäisine katto- ja seinäkoristeineen parin temmellyskenttänä takaa huikaisevan lopputuloksen.

Daughter's room progress & inspiration

We managed to get the wallpaper up in our daughter's room this weekend. The lamp will probably go elsewhere and the room is still looking rather grown-up, but I guess it will start looking like a child's nest once all her thing have found their place. One more layer of soap for the floor, the vent needs a cover, a few other tiny adjustments and we're done.

Viikonlopun aikana saatiin tapetti tytön huoneen seinään. Tuo lamppu ei todennäköisesti huoneeseen tule jäämään ja muutenkin näyttää aika aikuismaiselta vielä, mutta eiköhän siitä vielä lapsen huone tule, kun tavarat löytävät paikkansa. Vielä yksi kerros suopaa lattiaan, hormin ritilä paikoilleen ja muuta pientä silausta, sitten on valmista.

Welcome weekend!

At home today, the floor in our daughter's room is now finished, as is all the painting. It looks like we'll get wallpapering at the weekend.

(Michelle was asking about the floor after a previous post, and for anyone else who might be interested - we first applied layers of lye, followed by oil with a white pigment, then soap, which we'll keep cleaning the floor with in the future. All of these are by a Danish company called Trip Trap, which can be bought under the name Faxe in Finland, and Woca at least in the U.K.. (You can find out more here )

And let me show you a glimpse of some recent chair finds, the one on the left from an online auction site, and the two dark ones from a skip in our yard, so all in all, they cost next to nothing.

With our living room still in shambles, this wonderful nook from the home of fashion designer Elise Gug is just so perfectly inviting.

Today we're spending a mummy&daughter day, and tonight it's finally Midnight in Paris for me.

Crossing the channel from France over to England today - Abigail Ahern has such a unique style. I borrowed these pictures from the Selby, who recently visited her East London home that she shares with her husband and Maude the dog. Glad to see I'm not the only one, who saves those lovely, purple Liberty bags :)

Tänään hypätäänkin kanaalin yli Ranskasta Englannin puolelle - Abigail Ahernilla on mahtavan persoonallinen tyyli. Nämä kuvat lainasin Selbylta, joka vastikään vieraili Abigailin itä-lontoolaiskodissa, jota tämä asustelee miehensä ja Maude-koiransa kanssa. En ole näköjään ainoa, joka säästelee noita Libertyn ihania violetteja kasseja :)

It would be just about perfection to curl up in front of a fireplace on this gloomy and grey thursday morning. Luckily there's such a thing as candles.
