YESTERDAY

Yesterday's treats included
a coffee break with a dear friend & her baby
 in the morning,
and a dive into rose bushes
along my evening walk.
These September evenings
have been simply divine!

To end the day,
I found myself glued
to the first episode of Chef Table France
currently airing on Netflix,
with its spotlight on
I promise you'll be inspired
even if you're not that into cooking,
so do tune in, if you have the possibility!

(I made this apple pie at the weekend,
and it was quite a coincidence
to discover it was actually Passard
who invented the lovely idea
of "tarte du roses".)

Eilisen herkkuina aamupäiväkahvit ystävän ja pikkuisensa kanssa,
ja pujahdus ruusupuskiin iltakävelyn varrella.
Nämä syyskuun illat
niin lempeitä!

Myöhemmin tuijottelin Netflixistä
uutuussarjan Chef Table Francen
pariisilaisesta huippukokista
Väitän, että siitä inspiroituu kuka tahansa,
vaikkei kokkaus edes kiinnoistaisi -
katsokaa ihmeessä, jos vaan mahdollisuus!

(Viikonloppuna pyöräytin muuten
ja oli hauska yhteensattuma
huomata illalla,
että "tarte du roses"
onkin juuri Passardin ihana keksintö.)

SUNDAY FEELIN'

a few days of just me & her in the house.
the hallway is almost as good
for practicing the handstand
as the backyard.

in the afternoon,
she went to a birthday party,
while I walked a little.
popped to the winter gardens (again, sorry :)).
this time, there was a choir singing
& small gatherings of people
sharing a flask of coffee
or bottle of bubbly
in a quiet nook here & there,
under the shadow of
sprawling evergreens.

Then to the National Museum
and the photography exhibition of Jaakko Heikkilä,
whisking to a world of grand Venetian palazzos.

we've been having friends over in the last few days,
both the small & grown-up kind.
in other words,
a Sunday with
plenty of leftovers in the kitchen.

I made this simple quiche yesterday,
served with a salad of
melon, buffalo mozzarella & mint
& glass of chilled rosé,
which created a rather succulent combo,
and finished off with
meringue nests, fresh berries, fruit,
& a dollop of créme fraiche.

but the winning combination
is food & friends,
no matter what the menu.
( often the simpler the better I think...)

some Sunday excerpts here.
and I wish you a lovely evening!

COPENHAGEN CHRONICLES IV: ATELIER SEPTEMBER

There are places
& then there are places like Atelier September,
where the light streams through arched windows,
the music plays softly,
the food looks as fresh & delicate
as it tastes,
sprinkled with sprigs of mint
snapped from a little bush that's in bloom.

Where you end up returning
the next day,
having already decided to make it a regular haunt
whenever in town.

With these it's so long Copenhagen
& thank you my dear reader for tagging along!

TENDER

It's Friday,
and I'm indulging in
a spot of uninterrupted time
& this tender August light.

By now, the late summer light has come to its senses
even in the land of the midnight sun -
it knows how to dim down for the evening
for curling up with a book.

Perjantaina herkuttelen
omalla ajalla
elokuun hellivällä valolla,
joka ymmärtää kuitenkin
illalla hämärtyä
kirjan kanssa käpertymistä varten.

L' AIR DU MENTHE

The waft of mint takes me back to summer mornings

in grandma's garden.

She would tell me to rub the coarse leaves

between my fingertips

to release the fragrance

that she loved so much

(lavender being her other favourite).

And then, years later,

to velvety nights in the  house in the hills we rented in Italy

the summer before last,

- we'd open wide the double doors leading to the balcony

after our escapades for the day,

and the marriage of sage, rosemary and mint

would hit you

like a fragrant herbal bomb.

Despite permanently loving a  'bland' palette

of muted whites, greys and beiges,

I seem to be regularly drawn to certain colours

that beckon for a miniature exploration.

Minty greens are on the tip of my tongue right now.

Love,

Rebecca

P.S. That minty pesto turned out delicious

- recommend it!

(I think I ended up using about half and half of basil & mint.)
