Let me lead you through the front door,
do step right in.
Glimpses have appeared here and there before,
but today I thought I'd devote an entire post
to our hallway,
as it's the most recently completed addition to our home.
A rather large space bang in the middle of the apartment,
with five doorways opening up to other rooms
and one to a large walk-in wardrobe.
After quite a bit of deliberation over different floor types,
ranging from grey&white concrete tiles
to my never-dying dream of herringbone parquet,
we ended up treating the floors just the same
as in the rest of the apartment
(ripped up the lino,
sanded the original floorboards,
layers of lye, oil and soap.
I swear we used exactly the same recipe as elsewhere,
yet here the result was definitely whiter
- these things have a mind of their own sometimes...)
The idea was to make use of this space
that so often gets a bit overlooked.
We mulled over making it a lobby cum library,
but realised that wouldn't really work
with so many doors in the way.
But a bit of a gallery! That's what what it would be -
a work in progress,
now the beginnings of one anyway.
We painted the walls
and dear husband put in some labour of love
and created paneling all around.
The old cupboard is an Estonian beauty,
a lucky and extremely reasonable find.
We were thinking of painting it light grey,
but nah, in its matt near black state it shall remain.
We created a massive closet to the left of the main door,
which is big enough to hide all our bits and bobs
and also contains a separate shoe cupboard.
That's one thing that's so rewarding despite the pain in the neck
that renovating can be
- getting the chance to create enough storage space
at the same time,
which is often lacking in these old buildings.
Maybe a rug will find its way in one day
and a simple wooden bench would do just fine.
Otherwise candles, fresh flowers
and a hotchpotch of pictures
is our hallway recipe.

Eteinen on vilahtanut täällä silloin tällöin,
mutta nyt kokonainen postaus sen kunniaksi,
että uurastus eteisessä on tullut päätökseen.
Eteinen meillä on hallimmainen tila melko keskellä asuntoa,
josta avautuu viisi oviaukkoa eri huoneisiin
ja yksi vielä isoon komeroon.
Lattiapohdinnat risteilivät valkoharmaista betonilaatoista
ikuiseen unelmaani eli kalanruotoparkettiin,
mutta loppujen lopuksi ne käsiteltiin
aivan kuten muuallakin asunnossa
(revittiin korkkimatto,
alkuperäisten lankkujen hionta,
kerrokset lipeää, öljyä ja suopaa.
Voin vannoa, että ihan samalla reseptillä kuin ennenkin,
mutta nyt oli lopputulos kyllä valkoisempi kuin muissa huoneissa
- nämä jutut elävät välillä ihan omaa elämäänsä... )
Ajatuksena oli tehdä tästä vähän enemmän
kuin paikka, josta vain seilataan läpi.
Aluksi pohditiin 'kirjastoa',
mutta todettiin, ettei sitä saisi toteutettua kovinkaan järkevästi
rikkonaisten seinäpintojen takia.

Nyt on sellainen pistetty ainakin alkuun.
Seinät maalattiin
ja mies taikoi paneloidut seinäpinnat kauttaaltaan.
Vanha kaappi on eestiläinen kaunotar,
joka löytyi äärimmäisen huokeaan hintaan.
Aluksi suunniteltiin sen maalamista helmenharmaaksi,
mutta eihän tuolle mitään raaski tehdä.
Ulko-oven vieressä on siis suuri komero,
jonka sisälle mahtuu vielä erillinen kenkäkaappi.
Niin paljon kuin pitkittyneiden remonttiurakoiden keskellä
pyöriminen voi pänniä,
on kyllä yksi palkitsevimmista puolista se,
että samalla saa mietittyä säilytyspuolen kuntoon.
Sitä kun ei näissä vanhoissa taloissa ole välttämättä ennestään.
Ehkä tänne vielä löytää matto joskus tiensä
ja simppeli puupenkkikin kelpaisi
- muuten siis reseptinä kynttilät, leikkokukat
ja vaihtuvat kuvakollaasit.
