NON, MERCI

"And every day,

the world will drag you by the hand,
yelling,
"This is important!
And this is important!
And this is important!
You need to worry about this!
And this!
And this!"

And each day,
it's up to you to yank your hand back,
put it on your heart and say

"No. This is what's important."

~ Iain Thomas

(A reminder to myself
anyone else who may need it
that sometimes a firm but polite
"no, thank you very much"
can result in a huge yessss to what matters.)

AUTUMN BREATH

There's now a chill in the air
that gets to the bones,
but it still feels like
autumn has one wrapped up
in its tender arms.
When silence lands,
it's all the easier
to get lost inside one's
head full of dreams.
Even coffee seems to
have gained
an extra layer of smoothness...
Enjoying the technicolor spectacle
out there,
in quiet expectation
of the monochrome magic
that is just a few pages away
- my mental landscape.
Wishing you a beautiful week,
thanking you
for these moments with me.

AUGUST NOTES

Time, a muffled sound of footsteps from down below,
renovation has begun in the building across the street.
I have lunch with Bo Carpelan
his words about aging are unembellished,
yet filled with beauty.
I taste his sentences on the tip of my tongue,
vaguely sensing something about what’s yet to come
under his curious but gentle gaze.
A fly darts around,
doesn’t seem to find peace for its restless soul,
its wings carrying an air of midsummer
in the middle of an August day.
The end of the summer
has a bittersweet tinge.

"But a chair, sunlight, flowers:
these are not to be dismissed.
I am alive,
I live,
I breathe,
I put my hand out,
into the sunlight."

- Margaret Atwood

Aikaa, kadun puolelta askeleet kantautuvat vaimeina,
vastapäisessä talossa tehdään remonttia.
Lounasseurana Bo Carpelan,
hän puhuu vanhenemisesta,
kaunistelematta mutta kauniisti.
Maistelen lauseita,
aavistan jotain hamaa tulevaa,
tunnen uteliaan mutta lempeän katseensa.
Kärpänen poukkoilee,
ei löydä sielulleen rauhaa,
tuo elokuiseen päivään häivähdyksen keskikesää.
Loppukesässä suloista haikeutta.

LE BONHEUR

I'll murmur it,
today is one of those days.

AFTERNOON IN ARLES

“To hear never-heard sounds,
To see never-seen colors and shapes,
To try to understand the imperceptible
power pervading the world;"

"To fly and find pure ethereal substances
that are not of matter
but of that invisible soul pervading reality.
To hear another soul & to whisper to another soul;"

"To be a lantern in the darkness
or an umbrella in a stormy day;

To feel much more than know."

"To be the eyes of an eagle, slope of a mountain;
To be a wave understanding the influence of the moon;
To be a tree and read the memory of the leaves;
To be an insignificant pedestrian on the streets
of crazy cities watching, watching, and watching."

"To be a smile on the face of a woman
And shine in her memory
as a moment saved without planning.”

SEA RHYTHM

“I want to learn how to speak to anyone at any time
& make us both feel a little bit better, lighter, richer,
with no commitments of ever meeting again.
I want to learn how to stand wherever with whoever and still feel stable.
I want to learn how to unlock the locks to our minds, my mind,
so that when I hear opinions or views that don’t match up with mine,
I can still listen and understand.
I want to burn up lifeless habits of following maps & to-do lists,
concentrated liquids to burn my mind & throat
& I want to go back to the way nature shaped me.
I want to learn to go on well with whatever I have in my hands at the moment
in a natural state of mind,
certain like the sea.

I will find comfort in the rhythm of the sea.”

FLOWERS OF THE MIND

Easter break
& I feel the pulse slowing down already.
not good buddies at all
with that busybody called stress,
so there's an extra comfort in finding
my way back to rest.

my goodness,
that's the instant when the lustrous beauty
called inspiration takes over,
whispering ideas
& filling with a longing to follow
her luminous trail...

“The mind I love most must have wild places,
a tangled orchard
where dark damsons drop in the heavy grass,
an overgrown little wood,
the chance of a snake or two,
a pool that nobody fathomed the depth of,
and paths threaded with flowers planted by the mind.”

wishing you light & love
& a soaring creative spirit this Easter time.
