I couldn't visit Turku

without taking a look around 

the Pharmacy Museum & Qwensel House

along the riverside. 

The town was bustling outside,

while I silently roamed around

breathing in the atmosphere of years gone by.

Ikkunoiden alla ihmisvilinä markkinahumussa,

sisällä hiljaisuus ja menneen ajan havina.

DARLING BUD OF MAY

To wind up a  week of deadlines, a 20s bash and a study trip,

today a drive down a country lane

to a christening

amid wood anemones 

and birdsong.

What better time 

to celebrate a newborn

and new life

than in this glorious month of May. 

Her first name means "star"

and her second name "bright light",

which just fits to a t,

thinks her doting aunty. 

SUNDAY SILENCE

A homecoming from my study trip.

Ahead lies the promise in my calendar

of two weeks of uninterrupted time

to focus on images 

& wrapping up final work

for my course.

Sunday silence.

In with the new...

2014 waved a magic wand,

leaving me a little sad to see it go.

A year when things came together,

but also paving the way for the year to come.

A deeper sense of direction,

but also increasingly appreciating the small things,

the beauty in people and moments and places.

I spent the afternoon of New Year’s Eve 

at the art museum,

my eyes fixating on anything white and clean 

and empty…

I guess that’s how I feel about New Year –

a white, clean sheet that bathes in light.

Thankfulness brims to the surface for what’s gone,

now in with the new…

May 2015 treat you well.

It’s amazing how much can happen 

in the space of just one year.

2014 heilutti taikasauvaansa,

ja vähän haikeana sen hyvästelen.

Vuosi, jolloin palaset loksahtelivat,

viitoittaen myös tulevaa vuotta.

Uuden vuoden aattona 

kiertelin rauhassa Ateneumissa,

silmät hakeutuivat valon ja valkoisen puoleen.

Siltä uusi vuosi tuntuukin –

valkoiselta, valossa kylpevältä sivulta.

Menneestä kumpuaa kiitos, nyt uutta sisään…

Olkoon 2015 sinulle lempeä.

Vuodessa voi tapahtua yllättävän paljon.

FAB FABRIQUE

A few shots from Fabrique in Gamla Stan,

where I enjoyed a quiet cup of cappuccino,

as Stockholm was still rubbing its eyes

in the wake of  a new summer day.

MAGASIN 36

Crossing the Baltic Sea from Denmark,

we stopped over at Höganäs in South Sweden.

The kids got their Legoland and Tivoli,

and I got my Magasin 36 (and Mölle nearby)!

Magasin 36 is a former salt-glazing factory with kilns

that now houses a market hall, restaurant, 

café and hotchpotch of boutiques and studio spaces.

It has an artisan-industrial feel 

with a mystical, shadowy heart blackened over the years,

contrasted with light-filled, milky, chalk white spaces

on the outer rims.

In the middle of taking it all in,

some late breakfast of coffee and croissants at the café.

With its rugged, faded, 

'colourless' ambience that's so rich in different hues

and exquisite details thrown into the mix,

I knew I'd be in for a super aesthetic treat,

but what took me quite by surprise

was how bustling and relaxed it all was at the same time. 

P.S. I resisted the urge to return home

with that carved elephant head tied to the car roof :)

Meriteitse jatkoimme Tanskasta matkaa 

Höganäsiin, Etelä-Ruotsiin.

Lapset saivat nääs Legolandinsa ja Tivolinsa

ja minä Magasin 36:n (ja Möllen siinä sivussa)!

Tila on vanha suolalasituspaja,

jossa toimii nykyään sulassa sovussa 

kauppahalli, ravintola,

kahvila, putiikkeja ja studiotiloja. 

Rakennuksella on  maaginen, vuosien saatossa 

tummanpuhuvaksi paahtunut sydän,

jonka vastaparina on valoa tulviva, maitomainen, 

kalkinvalkea reunus. 

Sanomattakin oli selvää, 

että kun tiedossa on rosoinen, kulahtanut,

väreissä säästelevä mutta hienovaraisia sävyjä tulviva paikka

kera aikamoisten yksityiskohtien

olisin tuolla ihan estetiikkatäpinöissäni.

Mutta iloisena yllätyksenä tuli se,

kuinka paljon ihmisiä, elämää, puheensorinaa

ja leppoisaa tunnelmaa tuonne mahtui 

kaiken silmänruoan lisäksi.

sitonut auton katolle kotiinviemisiksi, sinne jäi :)
